Oyigbo/SARS Crisis: Gov. Wike Declares State Of Emergency


The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has declared state of Emergency in the Oyigbo community after the visit
of the state police commissioner.

Residents of different ethnic groups have complained about the mode of operation by the SARS operatives in the area, as it was learnt that the operatives harass residents and extort from those returning from farms and as well as business men in the area, the area is populated mostly by shop owners, farmers and traders.

Sources alleged that the presence of the operatives increased the level of kidnapping, armed robbery and killings in the area.

One of the sources who pled anonymity said that It’s been three weeks since the SARS unit was brought in Oyigbo by the LGA chairman, Gerald Offorji.

According to him, it is believed that he brought them in to extort the youths and pay him dividends from the extortion.

“Before they came in, this town has been relatively peaceful, calm and quiet, good for business and all.

“In this three weeks of SARS been in Oyigbo, there has been extortion of young boys, even kids not up to 12,” the source said.

Following the killing of the SARS officer, the police on Friday arrested 22 persons allegedly in connection with the murder in Oyigbo.

The violence between SARS operatives and residents have intensified over the last few days as different communities in the area have condemned the illegal arrest of car washers, shoe menders, hawkers, bus conductors and the likes, within the area.

The residents have appealed to the Governor Wike to intervene in the matter, as the presence of the SARS operatives were no longer welcomed in the area.
