Angry Youths Set Police Vans Ablaze As Trigger-happy Policeman Kills One (Video)


There was pandemonium in Ohafia, Abia State as angry youths set three police vans ablaze, a police barracks
and a magistrates’ court to protest against the killing of a youth identified as Friday Arunsi by an alleged drunk, trigger-happy police corporal.

According to reports, the policeman shot Arunsi dead on Friday along Ebem Ohafia Road. Confirming the incident, Ene Okon, the Commissioner of Police in the state, said the corporal, who was not on duty, was on his way from a drinking spree in company with two others; a sergeant and an assistant superintendent of police.

According to him the policemen's vehicle hit a stationary truck offloading goods and then they came out of their vehicle to confront the truck driver. H

Here's what he said;
“While the driver was querying the action of the policemen, there was shooting during which ‘someone was killed.’ the three policemen are already in detention, investigation is ongoing.

“Nobody could tell where the shooting came from as the youths were armed too and equally shooting. I have called the area commander and SARS. They said no one shot anybody.”

The incident made it the third extrajudicial killing that has happened in the state in the space of two weeks as confirmed by the state Commissioner of Police.

According to eyewitness accounts in Ohafia, the tragedy happened on Eni Njoku Road, few metres away from a police barracks. And while the victim died at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, another person reportedly sustained bullet injuries in the leg.

Subsequently, Ohafia youths took to the streets to demand justice, burning three police patrol vans, the Ohafia Magistrates’ Court, a high court, DPO’s Quarters and part of the Ohafia barracks.
