Bloodbath! As Gunmen Kill Nine In Plateau Community, Set Homes Ablaze

On Wednesday, unknown Gunmen reportedly killed nine civilians in an attack on a community in Plateau, in
what is being referred to as the latest outburst of intercommunal violence.

A Plateau state police spokesman revealed that the unidentified gunmen shot dead villagers and set about 22 houses on fire, in the terrifying assault on the village of Hura.

According to reports, the attack followed an increase in tensions between the local Irigwe community and Fulani herders over alleged cattle rustling and land disputes.

Regional lawmaker Haruna Maitala had revealed in a statement that;

“The attacks go on unabated, with a clear extension of unwarranted hatred amongst members of the two communities.”

Deadly clashes between Fulani herdsmen and farmers over land, grazing, and water have been a major problem in the area for years. An Aid group called Mercy Corps said these clashes accounted for more than 7,000 deaths in the past five years.

Even most of the violent attacks in some isolated areas often go unreported. However, the authorities in Plateau state continue to insist that the attacks and bloodshed has reduced following reconciliation efforts between the communities.

Central Plateau state is part of Nigeria’s so-called middle-belt that separates the mostly Muslim dominant north from the mainly Christian south.
