NIMC Hack Report: FG Allegedly Deactivates Sowore’s NIN, International I.D, Others

The Nigerian Government has allegedly deactivated the biometric identification of human rights activist and founder of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore.

Recall that Sowore who is a former Presidential candidate, was first arrested by the DSS on August 3, 2019 for calling on Nigerians to take to the streets to protest against bad governance in the country.

He was accused of planning to overthrow Buhari’s government by calling for a revolution, but since then, the Nigerian Government has failed to prove its case against the activist in court.

Rather, the government has adopted different means to keep the ‘Revolution Now’ convener out of circulation by confining him to Abuja through a court ruling and constantly harassing him.

According to Sahara Reporters, the documents deactivated include; his national identity card, permanent voter card, international passport and driver license.

As a result of this, Sowore will not be able to use any of the national documents to carry out any transaction within and outside the country as the cards cannot be read biometrically.

The Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is yet to give any explanation for the move but there are suspicions that the latest attack has to do with the story published by Sahara Reporters a couple of days ago.

The media house had exclusively reported how a hacker had broken into the server of the National Identification Management Commission to steal personal information of over three million citizens. A report the government quickly refuted as lies.

It was also learnt that prior to this recent move, the government had some weeks ago, attempted to freeze Sowore’s bank account domiciled with Guaranty Trust Bank – a development officials of the financial institution confirmed.
