Shehu Sani Reacts To Proposed Arrest Of The Newly Crowned Miss Nigeria, Shatu Garko

Former Lawmaker and human rights activist, Senator Shehu Sani has reacted to reports of a possible arrest of Shatu Garko, the newly crowned Miss Nigeria, alongside her parent by the Hisbah police.

Earlier, the Commander-General of Hisbah, Haruna Ibn Sina, said that parents of the Miss Nigeria winner may be arrested and interrogated for allowing their daughter to participate in Miss Nigeria Beauty Pageant for 2021.

Ibn Sina made this known while reacting to Miss Garko’s victory in the beauty pageant in an interview with BBC Pidgin. He described the pageantry as “illegal” and contrary to Islamic beliefs.

According to him, participating in a pageant is “forbidden” for Muslims from Kano, a northern Nigerian state with strict Sharia practices.

He added that they have confirmed that Ms Garko’s parents are living in Kano State and will soon be brought into custody and interrogated for the role they played— allowing their daughter participate in a beauty contest.

It would be recalled that 18-year-old Shatu Garko from Kano, emerged as the 44th Miss Nigeria, the first hijab adorning Muslim to win the beauty pageant.

Shehu Sani has now taken to the micro-blogging platform, Twitter, to condemn the proposed arrests adding the new Queen was properly dressed and did not cross the line of any cultural standard of the Northern People.

He went further to say that daughters of many influential people in the North have done worse, and appealed to the Hisbah religious authorities to let Garko be.

“Ms Shatu Garko contested Miss Nigeria Pageant decently dressed. She has not crossed the line of our cultural standards here in the North. There are the daughters of the rich and the powerful that have done that with impunity. I appeal to the Hisbah religious authorities to let her be,” Sani wrote.
