Another Gas Explosion Kills One, Injures Four Others In Lagos


A 35-year-old man identified as Ajibola Olaoye has reportedly been killed in a gas explosion that occurred at Alafia bus stop beside Atlas, in Orile Iganmu axis of Lagos State on Monday, August 3.
It was gathered that, four other people sustained various degrees of injuries, apart from the deceased. The Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the incident, saying that the deceased died while working on heavy-duty equipment.

Speaking on the development, Head of Public Affairs, LASEMA, Nosa Okunbor, said the explosion happened as a result of leakage. 

 “Upon arrival at the scene of the incident, it was discovered that there was an explosion from a gas cylinder used in welding a truck flatbed with an unknown registration number. The explosion was a result of gas leakage from the cylinder. 

“However, an adult male (Ajibola Olaoye, 35yrs) lost his life at the scene of the incident and four adult males sustained injuries and had been rushed to the hospital before the arrival of emergency responders. 

“The dead victim was bagged by the LRT and handed over to his family in the presence of Officers of the Nigerian Police Force from Amukoko Division,” Okunbor said. 

Recently, there have been series of gas explosions in Lagos, and it's beginning to look like a pattern. 

Less than a week ago, Usman Bello, a 30-year-old, was killed in an explosion, while three persons sustained injuries.

Giving the update, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the explosion was from a gas cylinder used in filling outdoor air conditioner of a split unit. 

A day after that, three others were confirmed dead in a similar explosion at Inua Mohammmed Street, Ajao Estate, Isolo.

Ibrahim Farinloye, the acting coordinator for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had said that, the explosion injured two other persons. 

Mr Farinloye said the explosion occurred at a panel beater’s workshop at the estate, “the explosion occurred while the technician was trying to up his oxycytelene flame popularly known as cabad’s cylinder.”
