The hackers actually took over the accounts, then sent tweets, asking followers of these celebrities to send bitcoins to a particular wallet and get double the amounts.

Lots of twitter users, thinking it was a genuine giveaway from their favorite celebrities, fell for it and sent bitcoins to the wallet but got nothing in return.
Some of the celebrities and companies that were hacked include;
Elon Musk, Kanye West, Bill Gates, Uber, Apple, Jeff Bezos amongst others.
To salvage the situation, Twitter stopped all verified accounts from tweeting. People with blue checks (verified accounts) would be unable to tweet or post at Twitter pending when the security glitch is fixed.
