“Take Them To Aso Rock” – Borno Kicks Against 602 Boko Haram Fighters Joining The Army

Some residents in Borno state are kicking against the reintegration of alleged repentant Boko Haram members into their communities in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The Nigerian Army had launched an amnesty program called Operation Safe Corridor, in 2016. An initiative they said, was for the deradicalisation and rehabilitation of ex-Boko Haram members.

The said initiative, also allowed for the reintegration of repentant Boko Haram members into society and for them to join the military, fighting Boko Haram and other terrorist groups. 

Recall we reported in July 18, that military commanders have now formally recruited about 602 repentant Boko Haram fighters into the army, two days after they allegedly took an oath of allegiance the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Maiduguri. 

However, residents who spoke with TheCable are reacting to the development, saying the idea was unacceptable. 

One resident said; 

“How can you bring in Boko Haram to fight Boko Haram? Does it not mean you are insane? Take them to Aso Rock! We, in Maiduguri don't need them.” 

Another resident said;

“From day one, Maiduguri people have never liked the idea of reintegrating the terrorists back to the community.

“The reason is simple. It means they are likely to come in contact with people who slaughtered members of their family and friends in their presence and they are expected not to think about it?

“They are expected to agree for these people to be with them in society? How do you expect us to live with the killers of our parents? Those who attacked us and burnt down our houses?”
