Over 1000 Opay Motorbikes Put Up For Sale As Company Goes Out Of Business

According to reports, over a thousand Opay motorcycles have been put up for sale as the business folds due to the ban on motorcycles and tricycles (Keke Napep) by the Lagos State Government.
Before the ban, Opay bikes helped alleviate the suffering of lagosians by providing a faster means of transportation in the state that is always traffic-jammed. The company also created thousands of jobs for Nigerians.

With the ban, the company which was by Opera, packed up, all those jobs have been lost and the motorbikes have now been put up for sale and goes for N280,000.

A Twitter user who was saddened by the development, narrated how Opay have helped Nigerians and lagosians in particular.

She wrote;

“I, in particular, made the Opay mode of transportation my exclusive means of transport as I effortlessly maneuvered the Lagos traffic and always got to work on time.

The payment process was also very accomodating as the company made payment very easy and cashless. That was the benefit as a user.

Now as a biker, I had the first-hand experience with one of the bike men, the man, in his late 50s was full of praises to the company for creating this source of income for him, he confided in me that his townsman had picked him up from Edo state, his village where he had stayed after losing his job for over 6 months and gave him the offer.

He claimed he was able to feed his family of 5 from the proceeds from the Opay motorcycle. Now there are countless of other men who like my biker, had the same story.

Looking at these over 1000 bikes here, these are lives wasted, businesses crumbled and families that went hungry. Just out of the blues, the Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo Olu banned motorcycle transport and Keke business from the highways of Lagos.

We were all looking to have a replacement that will at least, keep those guys busy but COVID-19 happened. I just wonder how all the bike men are coping.
This has clearly shown how difficult it is to run a business in Nigeria. The recent bombshell from NIPOST is also a means of destabilizing dispatch riders and their businesses.

I just hope the government compensates these businesses because the loss is too much and heart breaking.”
