Hate Speech: Nigerian Governors Not In Support Of Death Penalty - Gov. Tambuwal

The Governor of Sokoto State Aminu Tambuwal has disclosed to journalists on Wednesday, 20th November in Abuja, that none of his colleagues in the
other states supports death penalty for hate speech.

"No Nigerian governor is in support of the death penalty hate speech as being proposed in the Senate under a bill currently being considered by the upper chamber."

Governor Tambuwal, while asking the Senate to respect the wishes of Nigerians concerning the bill, further urged the National Assembly to organise a public hearing on the bill to make it pass through the actual processes for passage.

In his words: "I am not sure I have heard any governor come out to say he is in support of death penalty for hate speech.

"I believe the National Assembly should hold a public hearing on that bill so that due process of lawmaking is followed so that the views of Nigerians not just the governors will be well captured on that bill."

In respects to the controversial minimum wage and it's continuous delay, the governor disclosed that his colleagues are currently talking with labour organisations in their states.

"I’m sure it is work in progress before December all the states must have finished working out the details on the issue of minimum wage across the federation."

He assured that the governors are committed to the welfare of the civil servants in their states.

The anti-hate speech bill is being sponsored by one Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, who, according to reports, asserted that Nigeria may experience severe crisis except the hate speech bill is passed to end the challenge the citizens are facing.

Abdullahi, who is the deputy Senate chief whip said on Wednesday that the bill is being passed to stop attacks on Nigerians through social media.
